Could the Sony Xperia Z4 go global next week?

The Sony Xperia Z4 launched in the company’s native Japan earlier this year, and now reports have claimed the handset is about to go global.

An iterative update on the existing Sony Xperia Z3, the next-gen flagship has been restricted to Sony’s homeland since launch but could be the star of a New Delhi-based launch event next week, according to TalkAndroid.

The announcement in question has been penciled in for next Tuesday, May 26, with the eagerly awaited handset expected to be confirmed for an international rollout.

Although the Z4 is expected to be the star of the show, given the water-themed nature of the Indian event invite, it has been suggested that the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua could also make an appearance.

Continuing Sony’s trend for 6-month smartphone cycles, the Z4 debut last month as a minor improvement over the Z3.

Retaining its predecessor’s 5.2-inch, 1080p Full HD display, 20.7-megapixel primary camera and 3GB of RAM, the Z4 has jumped to Qualcomm’s latest 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor.

Chipset aside, the differences between the two devices are minimal. The Z4 has slimmed down from 7.3mm to 6.9mm thick and dropped 8g in weight to just 144g.

Despite slimming down, the handset offers improved staying power by jumping from a 2,930mAh to a 3,100mAh battery.

Despite the latest reports, leaks last month suggested that the Z4 would never be given an international release, instead going global under a different guise.

Having been spotted in the list of devices compatible with an official Z4 case, rumours have suggested that the Z4 will be rebranded the Z3+ when introduced to the wider world.

Sony has yet to give any details on the phone’s international release.
