Cortana to hit UK Windows Phone handsets in ‘less than two weeks’

Cortana, the Windows Phone answer to Siri is finally on its way to British shores as Microsoft confirms the voice assistant will hit the UK in “less than two weeks”.

Although this is good news for the growing Windows Phone community, the general smartphone owner is still facing a considerable wait for the Cortana software, with the imminent introduction to be of the developer preview only.

Fielding questions on Twitter as to when the UK can expect Cortana, Marcus Ash, Program Manager on the Cortana project stated: “Barring an unforeseen issue, down to less than 2 weeks for the developer preview.”

At present Cortana is exclusive to US Windows Phone handset owners, although Microsoft has previously promised that the software will be available to UK consumers before the end of the year.

With the voice assistant to be made available to registered Microsoft developers first, the software has been tweaked for UK audiences. As well as offing improved understanding of our British accents, Cortana will also be ridded of ghastly Americanisms by the time it hits our fair isle.

Speaking with TrustedReviews last week, Microsoft suggested it hopes Cortana will stop smartphone owners using smart devices in dumb ways.

“We have smart devices but we use them in dumb ways,” David Coplin, Microsoft Device’s Chief Envisioning Officer told us. “We have to start changing how we think about these devices.”

He added: “At Microsoft we these devices are increasingly the window into the digital world. We are building services that we hope will change peoples’ experiences so that wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you are able to reach in to the very best of what the digital world has to offer.

“Where we are going is in to a world of connected, intelligent services. For us, that means Cortana and it means a remedy for the fact that these devices can become smart.”
