Comparethemarket branches out into mobile phone deals

Price comparison site Comparethemarket.com has now branched out into the mobile industry.

Starting today, the meerkat-toting website will help customers compare smartphone deals from different service providers.

Customers will be able to use filter options like budget, phone model, usage, and contract length.

What’s more, Comparethemarket says it will be ‘regularly negotiating’ exclusive deals with mobile networks, which won’t be available any where else.

The company has already negotiated deals for both the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (64GB) and the iPhone 6 (16GB).

For the S6 Edge, you’ll be able to get 10GB of data from Vodafone at a cost of £44 per month with no upfront fee.

For the iPhone 6, you can get 2GB of data a month from Vodafone at £34 each month, with a £24.99 upfront cost.

“Most mobile customers roll on to new contracts with their existing suppliers without realising that better deals may be available elsewhere, even on the same network,” said James Padmore, Head of Utilities at Comparethemarket.

He continued: “There are so many phone deals available that compared them can be difficult and confusing. By using our platform, we hope to help consumers make informed decision quickly and simply which can save them money, not only on the latest handset, but also choose the tariff that best matches their usage.”

It’s also worth mentioning that buying a smartphone deal through Comparethemarket will grant access to Meerkat Movies.

MeerkatMovies is a new membership scheme that gives customers 2-for-1 tickets to movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at participating cinemas.

Comparethemarket launched back in 2006, initially focusing on helping consumers compare insurance for things like cars, homes, pets, and travel.

It later expanded into further ‘switchables’ like energy and utilities, broadband and digital TV, and financial services like loans and ISAs.

They should call themselves "Compare-the-meerkat"... :-)

Funny thing is, the same creatures are used in France for commercials by a website called www.lesfurets.com, which does exactly the same thing on insurance products.
