Coming soon to the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8? Levitating phone charging

It’s normally pretty important for your phone to remain grounded whilst charging, but a new Kickstarter project challenges that assumption.

Electrical jokes aside (aren’t they just the best?), the OvRcharge charger is an intriguing prospect – if a somewhat gimmicky one.

What appears to be a stand made out of a solid block of wood is actually an advanced charger station. By utilising the accompanying phone case, you can place your phone into a suspended position a couple of inches above the station. It will even enter a controlled spin to heighten the ‘Jedi powers’ effect.

The OvRcharge works using ‘magnetic levitation’ to keep the phone suspended, and induction charging to charge it without the need for physical contact.

It works with a whole host of phones, including all iPhones from the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C upwards, as well as a number of the latest handsets from Samsung, Sony, LG, and Huawei.

At the time of writing, the OvRcharge project was within CA$1,000 of its CA$40,000 Kickstarter goal with 13 days left to go, so funding looks likely. Pledging $239 will secure you an OvRcharge kit, which bundles in one charge case.

Is this the future of smartphone charging? Will the Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 be floating above our bedside tables at night? Something tells us they won’t be, but it’s an appealing thought.
