Ever felt like you came up with an idea just before a large company did it?
I remember a drunken conversation I had with Creative earlier this year on St Patrick’s Night (what other kind do you expect to have then?). It went a little like this:
Drunken Gordon: ”You know what *hick* is half the reason for the iPod’s success?”
Less Drunk Creative Head: ”Enlighten me.”
DG: ”The white earphones. It makes a *burp* statement. Every other company uses f*!cking standard black earphones and it doesn’t distinguish them. White headphones advertise the product even when it is still in your pocket.”
LDCH: ”That’s an interesting theory…”
Now, don’t for one second take this as me claiming any kind of foresight or even demanding a share of sales (though it would be nice). Since it takes longer than three months to get something okayed and pushed out the door in a large company, but it does prove two points. 1. That even choc-a-block full of booze I can still make a point and 2. Those clever chaps at Creative had spotted it too.
Of course, I had argued that the company should pick a single colour (I suggested Red), but hedging your bets and going with 10 also has its merits. Especially since no one else (at least in the mainstream) seems to be trying it.
Now from my male eye Creative appears to have gone with grey, yellow, pink, orange, black, blue, red, dark blue, white and purple, but no doubt a large gaggle of women were brought in to call them names like indigo, violet and cerise (whatever they may be?).
Personally, I don’t really care, because the 15mm rare earth magnet transducer, frequency response of 20Hz-20KHz, impedance of 32 ohms and sensitivity of 112dB suggest they would be a nice cheap replacement for the insulting cack that is usually supplied with your £200 portable music player.
The RRP of these “EP-480’s” will be the around the 30 euro mark, that’s just over 20 quid. Meanwhile, anyone else who wishes to invite me to parties, don’t let this put you off 🙂
