The rumoured cheaper iPhone could initially launch with limited stock numbers, with the budget handset aimed at developing markets.

According to sources within “the iPhone supply chain in Taiwan”, Apple is planning to launch the budget iPhone model for emerging markets rather than the UK.

Initial quarterly shipments of around 2.5 – 3 million budget iPhone units are planned for release by Apple, intended only to test the consumer response in those countries.

Apple is said to be using a 4-inch LTPS screen for the cheaper iPhone, which will supposedly use an A6 processor useful for “optimising the high yield rates of mature components”, say the sources.

The budget handset could also be encased in a more cost-effective plastic body.

However, if what these sources say is correct, the UK may not see a cheaper iPhone on the market for a while, if ever.

Cheaper iPhone Rumours

In January, Apple’s Senior Vice President Phil Schiller said that a cheaper device would never be the focus of the company’s efforts.

“Despite the popularity of cheap smartphones, this will never be the future of Apple’s products,” he said. “Every product Apple creates, we consider using only the best technology available.”

Despite this, rumours suggest the cheaper iPhone will have a 4-inch screen, be 9mm thick and will arrive in 5 different colour options similar to the latest generation of iPod Nano and iPod Touch to appeal to a younger age range of consumers.

Tipped to cost around £250, the budget iPhone would lack the Retina display of the iPhone 5 to attempt to keep the handset price low. A cheaper iPhone release date could be set for sometime in the summer.

The low-cost iPhone could be seen at Apple’s WWDC 2013 next month, alongside the Cupertino company’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 7.

We here at TrustedReviews have been debating about this budget device. A cheaper iPhone: should we care?
