Channel 4 has announced the launch of a new iPhone app allowing access to its library of on-demand programming.
The channel recently re-launched its online on-demand portal, 4oD, on Channel4.com and has now launched a free iPhone and iPod touch app to sit alongside it newly-updated iPad app.
Both the iPhone and iPad apps will give users access to the last 30 days of selected programming from Channel 4. Both apps can be used while on a 3G connection but you will only be able to play video while on a Wi-Fi connection – which Channel 4 says is to ensure video quality isn’t restricted.
Both apps will also now have a search functionality allowing users to more easily access the show they are looking for. Also, for the first time, there will be a direct link to Channel 4's content on iTunes, offering users the chance to download-to-own Channel 4 shows – though of course this content will not be free.
Helen Walker, 4oD Product Manager said: "We're delighted to bring 4oD to our viewers with iPhones and iPod Touches, and to offer our existing iPad users an update to their app, with a new carousel and ability to now browse the app over 3G.”
The 4oD app is available to iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4; iPod touch and iPad as long as they are running iOS 4.2.1 or higher. The service is currently only available in the UK.
The BBC iPlayer currently has an iPad app and an Android app but doesn’t have an iPhone app available yet.
