The latest news and reviews from Las Vegas: CES 2012 Special Report

As we write this, we are packing our bags, checking that our cameras are fully charged and making sure we all know the rules of blackjack as the annual pilgrimage to the technology nirvana that is the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) begins once again.

2012 like any other year promises some huge announcements and we’ll be on hand to bring you all the news as it happens. As we prepare to jet off to CES we’ve rounded up some of what we expect to see next week.

Televisions

OLED TVs have been around for some time now but have yet to enter the mainstream, with prices too high and sizes too small. This is all set to change at CES 2012 with LG promising to bring its 55in monster to the show – measuring just 4mm thick. LG is staying quite on price but we can’t see this being anything but very expensive.

3D TVs were of course one of the biggest stories of CES 2011 and they will be out in force again in 2012 with Samsung, LG and Panasonic all set to bring new 3D models to Vegas. Fingers crossed we’ll get to see some prototype active glasses-free sets where the shuttering is done inside the set, but we're not too confident it will happen.

Toshiba 55ZL2

We should be seeing some demos of the next big thing – 4K sets with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. Toshiba’s 55in 55ZL2 launched at IFA and should be on show again but could be joined by other manufacturers as they position themselves for the next big upgrade.

Connected TVs will once again be out in force, but it will be presence of TVs from Sony, Samsung and LG powered by Google TV. Could this finally see the platform become mainstream? We'll just have to wait and see.

Ultrabooks

This is set to be the year of the Ultrabook at CES with the likes of LG and Lenovo unable to wait until the official start of CES to announced their latest models. However while the current (ie the first) generation of Ultrabooks are seriously impressive it will be the second generation with Ivy Bridge processors which will be really exciting.

Lenovo ThinkPad Ultrabook

LG has already said that its latest models will ship with Ivy Bridge processors in the middle of 2012 and we expect to see many, many more models from the likes of Asus, Acer, HP and Samsung in Las Vegas next week.
