Google Maps is coming to CarPlay along with other navigation apps

At its WWDC 2018 keynote, Apple announced that drivers will finally be able to use Google Maps to navigate while they’re using CarPlay.

It was a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moment but at its WWDC 2018 keynote, Apple made a quick announcement that quietly made CarPlay about ten times more useful by letting drivers finally use Google Maps instead of Apple’s own navigation software.

Apple Maps isn’t nearly as bad as it was when it first launched, but it’s still behind the best efforts from competitors.

CarPlay has already done well to integrate with third party messaging services like WhatsApp, but support for third-party maps has been an unfortunate blind spot so far.

This update should become available alongside the rest of the features coming to iOS 12 when the iPhone’s software is released.
