Canon has today unveiled the EOS 60Da – a high resolution DSLR designed specifically for astrophotgraphy. Based on the stock 60D the new space-watching DSLR is designed to capture rich red colours produced by emission nebulae, with a modified low pass filter that makes it more sensitive to hydrogen-alpha (Há) wavelengths of light – that’s red to you and I.
Canon claims the new model will be ideal for shooting astronomical phenomena such as diffuse nebulae with the 60Da able to clearly capture the distinct red colour caused by the ionisation of hydrogen. In a standard DSLR, an infrared (IR) filter limits the amount of Há light that passes through to the camera sensor, reducing the transmission of red signals to prevent unwanted colour artefacts in the final image. The EOS 60D, however, features a new modified filter that offers three times more transparency for Há light.
Elsewhere the 60Da will closely resemble a regular 60D, and will use the same 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processor. Sensitivity, meanwhile, will stretch from ISO 100 to 6,400 with expanded settings up to 12,800. On the back, the 60Da will sport a 3in vari-angle LCD that offers a 1,040k-dot resolution.
Those looking to accessorize will be pleased to note that the EOS 60Da is to be compatible with Canon’s optional TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller, which allows the flexibility to remotely capture images at custom-selected intervals or shoot exposures over long periods, making it ideal for shooting time lapse movies of the night skies.
The Canon EOS 60Da is expected to land in UK shops by June, priced at £1,174.99.
