Canon continues to update its PowerShot line for the new year with the announcement of the A520.
Photographic and imaging giant Canon has continued the update of its digital camera range with the announcement of the PowerShot A520, an upgrade to the A85 released last July.
Like the A85, the A520 will feature a four Megapixel CCD and a 1.8in LCD, however Canon claims it will be 13 per cent smaller and 20 per cent lighter. Of course, these are the same claims the company made last week about the release of the 3.2 Megapixel A510 (a replacement to the popular A75). This is because their predecessors both shared the same casing then and the new models share the same casing now.
Canon’s Glass Moulded Optics (GMO) lens technology is also standard on the A520, as it is on the A510, with the same 4x zoom and f-stops between 2.5-5.5, the equivalent to a 35-140mm on a 35mm camera.
Shooting modes have been increased from 13 on the A85 to 20 on the A520 and movie clips with sound of up to three minutes are now possible, a significant improvement on the A85’s 30 second limit. Photos and movies are stored on the newly adopted SD memory card format – as the whole line moves away from Compact Flash – and can be edited in-camera.
Naturally, the primary reason for purchasing an A520 over an A510 comes down to the higher Megapixel rating as both cameras are otherwise almost identical. For example, potential buyers of both cameras with benefit from Canon’s new zoom flash technology, HF-DC1, discussed with last week’s release and both are PictBridge compatible for direct printing without a PC. Similarly, for Windows users each camera comes with the latest version of ZoomBrowser EX while ImageBrowser is supplied for Macs. Canon also bundles PhotoStitch and PhotoRecord along with ArcSoft’s PhotoStudio for fans of photo editing.
