Canon has announced the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II, thus continuing its battle with Sony for the premium point-and-shoot crown.
The follow-up to 2014’s Canon PowerShot G7 X sports the same 20.1-megapixel 1-inch CMOS sensor, but adds a new DIGIC 7 processor and an improved autofocus system.
In addition, you get a fixed f/1.8-2.8 4.2x optical zoom lens and improve optical image stabilisation technology. The LCD display is also more flexible this time around, tilting down as well as up.
In other words, it’s clearly Canon’s answer to the Sony RX100 IV – minus the viewfinder.
When Sony announced the original Sony RX100 in 2012, it created a brand new category of camera. Here was a compact point-and-shoot that took excellent pictures thanks to an unusually large 1-inch image sensor paired with quality fixed optics.

Canon appeared to have been caught flat-footed, and it took until after the released of the Sony RX100 III, in 2014, for the original Canon PowerShot G7 X to be issued. Still, it managed to come up with a credible RX100 rival.
Now the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is here to take on the current generation RX100, and it’ll be considerably cheaper too. When it hits shops in April, it’ll cost just £549.99 – that’s about £300 cheaper than the RX100 IV’s launch price.
