Canon PowerShot G3 X premium compact camera teased

Canon has announced that it is working on a new premium point-and-shoot camera with an impressive optical zoom lens, called the Canon PowerShot G3 X.

It’s early days for the new camera, to the point where Canon will only be showing off a prototype at the CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015 being held in Tokyo next week.

The two most notable parts of this high-end point-and-shoot are its image sensor and its lens.

The PowerShot G3 X’s image sensor will be a larger-than-average 1-inch example, placing it alongside the likes of the Sony RX100 III for light-capturing feats.

The lens, meanwhile, will be a 24-600mm (35mm film equivalent) 25x optical zoom lens, which comfortably eclipses the aforementioned Sony point-and-shoot. As Canon says, it will enable a wide range of focal lengths, “from wide-angle to telephoto.”

Of course, such a serious zoom lens will also add a fair amount of bulk to the final package, so the PowerShot G3 X won’t be quite as easy to slip into a pocket as most premium point-and-shoots.

Other than these components, the image provided reveals the presence of Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity options.

That’s all we know about the Canon PowerShot G3 X at this point. This really is just a teaser of things to come – or even a teaser of a teaser, given that its forthcoming debut outing will be as a mere prototype.

Still, that combination of decent-sized image sensor, point-and-shoot compactness, and impressive optical zoom capabilities has our interest piqued.
