The Canon PowerShot G16 has been officially launched as the follow-up to last year's advanced compact camera, the Canon PowerShot G15.

Canon announced the launch of the PowerShot G16 at the same time as the launch of the Canon PowerShot S120, and the two compact cameras share a number of core components.

Powering both models is Canon's new Digic 6 processor, which allows for superior low-light performance and faster shooting. The Canon PowerShot G16 can manage continuous shooting at over 9fps.

Meanwhile, the G16's autofocus is 41 percent faster than last year's Canon PowerShot G15, and it can manage Full HD video recording at 60fps.

Like the Canon PowerShot S120, the PowerShot G16 also utilises a 12.1-megapixel 1.1.7 CMOS sensor, with sensitivity going up to ISO 12800. It also has a 5x optical zoom lens with an f/1.8 to f/2.8 aperture and a maximum wide angle of 28mm.

The G16 shares the S120's new Star Mode, which is aimed at the star gazers among you and should serve to highlight the camera's improved low-light chops.

Where the Canon PowerShot G16 really differs from the super-slim S120, of course, is in its external design. The G series has always been heftier and more suitable as a back-up camera for the serious photography enthusiast, and the G16 is no different.

Like the G15, its sturdy aluminium body features a full range of manual controls, including a two-level control dial, a dedicated movie button, a programmable front control ring, a rear dial and a shortcut button. There's also the usual viewfinder for truly accurate snaps, though unlike the S120 the G16's 3-inch display isn't touch-compatible.

The Canon PowerShot G16 is the first member of the G series family to feature Wi-Fi connectivity, so you can connect to your smartphone for GPS-stamping and sharing your photos.

Expect to see the Canon PowerShot G16 in UK shops some time in mid to late October for a price of £529.99.
