Canon has officially announced two two high-end point and shoot cameras in the PowerShot G5 X and the PowerShot G9 X.
Both cameras pack 1-inch 20.2-megapixel CMOS image sensors, Digic 6 image processors, Wi-Fi, and NFC into relatively compact shells.
The PowerShot G5 X is the larger of the two, with a built-in EVF and an f/1.8 to f/2.8 2x Canon optical zoom lens. It also boasts a nine-blade iris diaphragm for those pronounced background blur shots. It’ll cost a pretty reasonable £630, too.
Perhaps the more interesting of the two (and not only because it didn’t like like the G5 X) is the PowerShot G9 X. Here, at last, is Canon’s response to the Sony RX100 range, which is on its fourth iteration lest we forget.
The G9 X has the same 1-inch images sensor as the G5 X, but packed into a tiny point and shoot body. Yep, just like the RX100.

It’s a little more stripped back than Sony’s highly-regarded series, however, with an emphasis on touchscreen controls, no built-in EVF, and a lighter 209g body. At £400, it’s also set to be around half the price of the Sony RX100 IV.
Both cameras also come with a flexible charging system that allows you to hook up directly to the mains through a USB port and via a bundled external battery charger, which sounds handy.
The Canon PowerShot G5 X and G9 X will both be hitting shops some time in November.
