CameraMator Aims to Bring Wireless Tethering to DSLRs

A new tech project on Kickstarter plans to make the wireless tethering feature available to a wide range of digital SLR cameras.

Tethering is commonly achieved by connecting a camera’s USB port to a laptop or desktop computer. A few Wi-Fi enabled cameras now offer this kind of feature wirelessly, bringing it in reach of iPhones and iPads.

But what if your DSLR doesn’t do wireless tethering? That’s where the CameraMator concept comes in.

CameraMator is an add-on accessory that connects physically to the camera and then creates a wireless link for a companion iOS app.

The app will launch with features such as camera control, self timer, instant image review, HDR bracketing, an intervalometer (for time-lapse) and a photo sharing feature.

Images are uploaded from the camera to the mobile device, where they can be viewed or edited on the spot. The remote control feature means the camera can be put in ‘hard to reach’ places to get unusual shots.

The accessory can mount on the camera’s hot shoe, or if that’s in use by a flash gun, an L-bracket can hold the CameraMator unit. The add-on creates its own network or it can join an existing WiFi network.

The project debuted on Kickstarter on August 6 with a funding goal of $80,000. Its creator, California-based Usman Rashid, says that after several prototypes he now has “a fully functional device working with all the top cameras from Canon and Nikon.”

The compatible models are listed on the project page, with others being tested. CameraMator is mainly a tool that will be useful for commercial photographers. The project plans to finalise tooling in September for an October production run and November delivery to its Kickstarter backers. The price for backers is $199 for the unit and app ($185 for the first 200 investors). Its eventual retail price will be closer to $299 according to the developer.
