A new trailer for the latest Call of Duty game, due out November 4, has just landed on YouTube.
The game, dubbed Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, will also come with a remastered version of Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare when pre-ordered.
We'll be taking a closed look at the trailer soon, but you probably just want to watch it right now, so here it is:
Analysis: What can we learn from the Infinite Warfare trailer?
Clearly, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is set in a distant future beyond any previous game. The trailer starts out with a catastrophic attack on Geneva in Switzerland, a Pearl Harbour-style surprise attack from a technically advanced force.
A newsreader calls it "the biggest surprise attack in the history of the world".
But who is responsible? It sounds like it's the Settlement Defence Front (SDF), as confirmed by a commander who announces "we're now at war with the Settlement Defence Front".
So, my hypothesis is that in this future man has expanded into neighbouring planets and created settlements in space. Perhaps these settlements are semi-autonomous and self-governing, it's not clear, but some kind of political fallout results in the SDF attacking earth.
It sounds, in effect, like a 'new world' vs 'old world' war – think the American War for Independence. This is all my conjecture at the moment, but it would explain why the attack was such a surprise and the move into war in space.
Activision has also explained how you'll play as a captain of a warship:
"Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare puts storytelling front and center in a rich, immersive narrative. Infinity Ward breaks new ground by exploring the weight of leadership and its responsibilities. In a desperate time of overwhelming adversity, the player, as Captain of their own warship, must take command against a relentless enemy. Experienced soldiers are thrust into extraordinary circumstances that will test their training and reveal their true character as they learn to lead and to make the hard decisions necessary to achieve victory."
Several moments, such as the one above, suggest you're part of a multi-national force from Earth – we see a few different flags on shoulders, but obviously this guy is the baddest of the lot. I mean, the look on his face just says "don't mess with me".
A couple of things from his shot stand out. One is another flag on the shoulder and the other is the 'mec' soldier in the background. I assume this is suit rather than a drone, but don't rule the latter out.
We're going to space!
We're in space!
There's quite a bit of piloting and dog fighting (in space) in the trailer, which could prove for some very interesting multiplayer.
It also looks like there'll be some Titantfall-style mech action, though none was specifically shown in the trailer.
And clearly you'll end up on some planets. That's Saturn in the background, so I'm guessing this is one of its moons.
