Shortly after Activision confirmed that the latest iteration of its flagship franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts, would officially arrive on November 5, the publisher launched the first teaser trailer for the game.
The next CoD game has been subject of intense speculation in recent weeks, and now Activision has finally lifted the lid on when one of the the most anticipated games of 2013 will go on sale.
Following the release announcement, the 90 second trailer was posted to YouTube, but does not showcase any gameplay, nor does it offer any hints about the games plot or context.
Instead it depicts a host of historical warriors in their traditional 'masks' before focusing on the skull mask worn by Lt. Simon "Ghost" Riley, who is expected to be the game's central character.
The voiceover says: "There are those who wear masks to hide. And those who wear masks to show us what they stand for.
"To inspire. To unite. To defy. To strike fear in the hearts of their enemies, and hope in the hearts of their followers.
"There are those who wear masks to protect themselves, and those who wear masks to protect us all."
At the conclusion of the trailer, it was revealed the game would also make an appearance at the next-generation Xbox launch on May 21, which all-but-confirms a version of Ghosts is in development for the new console.
In the official release notice Activision claimed COD: Ghosts will set a "new benchmark for the next generation," while promising an "all-new world, story, characters and experience," as well as a new engine from Infinity Ward.
Infinity Ward's executive producer Mark Rubin said: "Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we're not resting on our laurels.
"We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we're building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can't wait to share them with our community."
Gamers are now able to pre-order the long-awaited title from their favourite games stores worldwide. The countdown is officially on.
