With Call of Duty: Ghosts expected to be formally unveiled as the next instalment to the iconic gaming franchise in the coming days, Activision has updated the official COD website with a teaser image.

Although the teaser site has failed to formally confirm the title of the 2013 Call of Duty release, the website clearly shows the image of a ghost’s face with the lead picture made up a hundreds of smaller images submitted by avid COD gamers and fans.

The newly launched COD: Ghosts teaser image has appeared just hours after a number of reports suggested Activision will formally unveil the imminent Call of Duty title tomorrow, May 1.

Believed to be set to make its formal debut during the NBA basketball playoffs in the US, Call of Duty: Ghosts is widely expected to be unveiled in video form, with a televised advert airing during the primetime slot showcasing a selection of in-game content and generating much buzz around the release.

Last week first indications of a potential Call of Duty: Ghosts release came to light with supermarket chain Tesco prematurely letting slip Activision’s plans and listing the final Call of Duty: Ghosts cover art online.

Hinting that the eagerly awaited COD: Modern Warfare 3 and COD: Black Ops 2 follow-on will be made available for the upcoming PS4 and Xbox 720 platforms, Tesco has suggested the Infinity Ward developed title will be “powered by a new next-generation engine.”

The retailer’s product listing for the game reads: "The franchise that has defined a generation of gaming is set to raise the bar once again with the all-new Call of Duty: Ghosts. Published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the original Call of Duty and the seminal Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise, delivering a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast, all powered by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine."
