Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 developer Activision has confirmed that the latest addition to the globally dominant gaming franchise has grossed a staggering $1 billion (£621.5m) in its opening 15 days on sale.

Hitting the milestone sales figure a single day quicker than its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Activision has calculated the Black Ops 2 sales success based on internal sell-through estimates, official Chart-Track data information and retail data.

Becoming the fasted COD titled to gross $1bn, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has hit the lofty sales mark despite reports that day-one sales were down by as much as 20 per cent year-on-year when compared with Modern Warfare 3.

On track to be the highest grossing entertainment release of 2012, beating games such as Halo 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3 as well as high-profile box-office hits such as Skyfall, Activision has, according to gaming blog CVG, suggested that the monumental Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 sales achievement displays “the strong appeal of interactive entertainment to audiences worldwide.”

Describing the annual appeal of the Call of Duty franchise as “one of the most significant entertainment event of each of the last six years,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick added: Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined."

Currently targeting four straight weeks atop the UK All Format Gaming Chart, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last week fought off strong competition from new entry Far Cry 3 to retain its sales crown with the Ubisoft published release lining up in second ahead of FIFA 13 in third.
