Call of Duty 2013 release confirmed, will ‘raise the bar higher’

A Call of Duty 2013 release has been confirmed by publisher Activision, with the games maker suggesting the Q4 addition to the COD franchise will “raise the bar even higher.”

Speaking during Activision’s quarterly profits call, the gaming giant has confirmed that last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 offering will be followed up by a Call of Duty 2013 release, the ninth straight year in which a Call of Duty branded game will have been released.

Although failing to confirm whether the Call of Duty 2013 release will be the widely expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a game repeatedly rumoured to be in development at Infinity Ward, Activision CFO Dennis Durkin has suggested the upcoming release will continue to further the company’s globally dominant gaming brand.

“The Call of Duty franchise continues to set the bar for innovation and we expect a new Call of Duty game in development for 2013 to raise that bar even higher,” Durkin said.

Teasing the possibility of the upcoming Call of Duty 2013 release be made available for next-generation consoles such as the upcoming PS4 release and widely expected Xbox 720, Durkin suggested that the incoming consoles could cause a drop in sales for the upcoming title.

“There is increased volatility this year due to the ongoing console transition, which makes predicting the future more challenging than during normal uses in the cycle,” the Activision head said. “For Call of Duty, consistent with our past practices, we are planning for the main line release in Q4 to be down versus 2012.”

Whilst Call of Duty 2013 is likely to be one of Activision’s most high priority and high-profile launches of the year, the latest addition to the COD franchise will not commandeer all of the publishers efforts. Teasing a selection of new titles, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick stated: “As we look to 2013, we will continue to invest in our established franchises, as well as several new properties.”

Suggesting the upcoming Call of Duty 2013 release will see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 enter the realms of reality, voice actor Billy Murray, who voiced Captain Price in previous COD titles, was recently quoted as stating: “On Monday I am off to meet Infinity Ward about the next game, Modern Warfare 4.”

He reportedly added: “I’m doing work on a sequel to Modern Warfare 3, it carries straight on and I only ever appear in the Modern Warfare games.”
