Budget 8GB iPhone 4 introduced - for £319

A "cheap" edition of the iPhone 4 has replaced the iPhone 3GS on the Apple Store. If you want a cheaper way into the iPhone club but don't want to go second-hand, the 8GB iPhone 4 is one of the best options.

The budget 8GB iPhone 4 model is available to buy from the Apple Store right now, for £319 SIM-free. This is a lower-storage version of the phone released in 2010.

What do you miss out here that you get in the iPhone 5? It has the same pixel density in its display, but the screen is the traditional 3.5in size, rather than the 4in of the iPhone 5. Its processor is also much slower, with a single-core 1GHz CPU, and the camera less powerful, with a 5-megapixel sensor rather than the 8-megapixel one found in the 4S and iPhone 5.

Opting for this cheaper model will save you £130 off the 16GB iPhone 4S, which costs £449, and £210 off the 16GB iPhone 5.

If your heart is still set on the new iPhone 5, the pre-order for the phone will go live tomorrow, 14 September, and start shipping on 21 September. The iPhone 4 sold 1.7 million units in its first three days back in 2010, but will the iPhone 5 outperform it? Almost certainly.

Piper Jaffray analysts predict that the phone will sell between 6 and 10 million by the end of September - equating to the first two weeks of its life, including the pre-order window.
