BT promises Dolby Atmos from January 31, mulls TV and movies expansion
BT has announced when we’ll see its first Dolby Atmos friendly content, and says it may not be limited to sports in the future.
BT Sport Ultra HD customers will be able to watch the first game of the Premier League live in 4K and Dolby Atmos on January 31 next year. You’ll also be able to watch every League game of the season that follows in 4K and Dolby Atmos too, as reported by What Hifi.
For the unaware, Dolby Atmos is a new standard of surround sound technology that positions audio above you as well as around you. This requires you to install a compatible surround sound setup that includes speakers on the ceiling or upwards-firing speakers. Unfortunately, without such a setup, you won’t be able to take advantage of the full Dolby Atmos experience.
BT announced that its “next-generation” TV service would feature Dolby Atmos last month, adding that we’d also see a new user interface too. And according to SeenIt, BT has confirmed that it is looking to expand Dolby Atmos to movies and TV shows too:
“At a media demonstration of Atmos on Tuesday night, executives said they were now in discussions with Hollywood studios about how they can bring the same high quality sound to the films available to buy and rent through BT TV’s digital downloads store.”
The report continued: “The company is also looking to leverage its partnership with US drama channel AMC to bring enhanced features, such as 4K and Atmos, to its output…”
BT TV commercial director Riccardo Balestiero was quoted as saying: “The highest likelihood is that when we do roll out beyond sport, they will be the first partner.”
