BT pledges ultrafast 300Mbps broadband in 10m homes by 2020

BT is aiming to bring broadband speeds of 300-500Mbps to 10 million homes in the next five years.

The telecoms provider says it is committed to transitioning “from superfast to ultrafast” and aims for it to be available in the majority of premises within a decade.

The pledge was made by BT CEO Gavin Patterson at the Delivering Britain’s Future conference in London, where he also promised a 1Gbps service for those who want it.

Patterson also threw BT’s weight behind government targets to bring minimum broadband speeds up to 5-10Mbps, allowing everyone can enjoy HD media streaming.

He also said BT wants to go “further and faster” in going beyond the targets for coverage in 95 per cent of premises by using innovative funding and technical solutions.

To aid this, BT also plans to introduce satellite broadband for the hardest to reach areas.

Patterson said: “For the past five years, the UK has been the largest digital economy in the G20, by percentage of GDP. We think the UK has an even brighter future ahead if we make the right decisions today.

“We want to forge an ultrafast future for Britain and stand ready to help government deliver the broadband speeds necessary for every property to enjoy modern day internet services, such as high definition TV streaming and cloud computing. To achieve this, we need a collaborative effort across industry and government.”
