BT Home Hub 5 coming later this year

The BT Home Hub 4 has only just launched but BT has already unveiled the BT Home Hub 5.

It was at the UK launch of the Home Hub 4 that BT teased the release of the next model, by showing off a working prototype.

The BT Home Hub 5 is due to land “later this year” according to BT’s MD of consumer broadband David McDonald, and will become the standard router shipped to new BT Infinity cusomters.

Although exact plans for current BT Infinity customers weren’t detailed, David McDonald said that they would likely mirror provisions for the Home Hub 4 launch.

That points towards an option to re-sign up for a contract to get the hub for free, or to pay a nominal fee.

With the Home HUb 4 that fee is £35, however the BT Home Hub 5 is a little more advanced.

The Home Hub 5 incorporates both a router and modem, and is also Wi-Fi ac compatible – this is the standard following on from Wi-Fi n.

This rules-out having to use a separate BT Openworld modem box, and the small footprint of the Hub 5 should prove lounge-friendly.

Alongside the Home Hub 5, BT announced its plans to introduce new fast-speed BT Infinity broadband.
The 160Mb ceiling is to be raised to 320Mb, all for only £50 a month.

However, this super-fast broadband will only be available to the select few with ‘fibre-to-premises’ broadband.
