Britain has the fastest 3G and 4G internet in the world

Despite our endless whining about lost signal and rubbish phone networks, Brits actually enjoy the best average mobile speeds on the planet, a new report has found.

The welcome accolade comes courtesy of this year’s State of the Internet report (as spotted by The Inquirer), which reveals Britain is on top when it comes to both 3G and 4G networks.

In the UK, we reportedly managed an average connection speed of 20.4Mbps in the first quarter of 2015.

That’s a 27 per cent increase on the fourth quarter last year, and double the speed of Denmark, which came second place with an average 10Mbps speed.

We also trumped Sweden with 8.9Mbps, Russia with 7.5Mbps, and the USA with just 4Mbps.

It’s a much more grim affair at the bottom of the list, with Vietnam posting an average mobile internet speed of just 1.3Mbps.

When it comes to peak mobile connection speeds, however, Britain failed to bag top spot. Instead, glory goes to Australia, with a staggering peak recorded speed of 149.3Mbps. That’s better than most cable broadband connections in the UK.

The worst peak speed was seen in Indonesia, where the maximum recorded download rate was a paltry 8.2Mbps.

When it comes to network consistency, Denmark pops up again, with 98 per cent of its connections managing above 4Mbps – that’s compared to 95 per cent in the UK.

It’s not so cheery in Vietnam, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Bolivia, however, all of which had less than 1 per cent of IP address connecting at speeds above 4Mbps.

The UK failed to top the average fixed broadband connections too, a victory unsurprisingly claimed by South Korea.

The eastern nation had an average connection speed of 23.6Mbps last quarter, which is up by 6.3 per cent since last year’s Q4.

Ireland came second with 17.4Mbps, and Hong Kong slotted in third at 16.7Mbps.
