BOSEbuild is a $150 speaker kids have to build themselves

Bose is hoping to inspire the next generation of audio engineers with a new $150 speaker that young folks need to build before enjoying its aural goodness.

The aptly-named BoseBUILD comes unassembled and requires a companion iOS app to walk children through the build process.

The app will teach kids about the concepts of wavelengths, frequencies, electro magnets  and such, while educating them about how a speaker reproduces music.

The app will confirm the successful steps have been taken until the Bluetooth speaker is fully assembled. It’s also customisable through coloured lights and faceplates.

Bose says it offers durable high quality materials for the speaker, which is available today in the US.

The project comes during a renewed push towards involving children in creating and coding at an earlier age, sparked largely by the emergence of micro PCs like the Raspberry Pi.

“Dr. Bose was fascinated with electric trains when he was very young,” says Bob Maresca, CEO and president of Bose.

“He learned how they worked by taking them apart and putting them back together, and he had that same insatiable curiosity throughout his entire life.  That spirit is still at the heart of Bose.  And it’s a great example of what we’d like BOSEbuild to offer – fun and relatable ways for kids to make something they really want and can use for years to come, while learning about the incredible science and technology behind it.”
