2K Games has announced the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel release date, with the game arriving on October 17.

Landing on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year, the game takes place between Borderlands and Borderlands 2.

The game’s storyline focuses on Borderlands 2’s main villain, Handsome Jack among four other new playable characters: Athena the Gladiator, Wilhelm the Enforcer, Claptrap the Fragtrap and Nisha the Lawbringer.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is strangely developed only for old-generation consoles and PC, but introduces some new features to the series.

The game is set on Elpis, Pandora’s moon and features a new oxygen system that not only lets you breathe, but will enable you to perform moon jumps and double jumps as it doulbes up as an oxygen-powered jetpack.

Like with other resources in the Borderlands series, oxygen is a lootable reserve. This hopefully means it will be quite hard to run out of.

“The teams at Gearbox and 2K Australia have combined the best talent from both studios to create a Borderlands experience that we know fans are going to love,” said Christoph Hartmann, 2K President. “For those who haven’t played the critically acclaimed franchise, there’s never been a better time to jump in that with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.”

The game also introduces laser guns to your arsenal among other new weapons. There are some that fire continuous laser beams and the kind that produce laser bursts with satisfying “pew pew” sound effects.

2K has added Cryo weapons as well, which bring a new elemental damage type to the series.

If you fancy pre-ordering the game, you can get access to the bonus “Shock Drop Slaughter Pit” content. This DLC takes place in an “old Dahl facility on Pandora’s moon.”

Here you’ll need TR4-NU, who 2K describes as someone who was “once one of Dahl’s military recruiters until he went crazy.” This character hosts the aforementioned Shock Drop Slaughter Pit, which offers rewards and treasure to those who can beat the “moon’s toughest enemies”.
