Boost for U.S. Premier League fans as NBC Sports app hits Apple TV

Apart from getting up at the crack of dawn for those early kick-offs, believe it or not, watching Premier League football in the United States is easier than it is in the UK.

The agreement the NBC Sports has with the Premier League entitles it to show every single game, live across the course of the season, whether it’s televised or available through the digital-only platforms.

There are no 3pm on a Saturday blackouts to worry about and there’s no missing out on your team’s midweek games because Sky or BT have chosen to show Chelsea again. Some games are, shock horror, even televised on network, free to air television.

All of this means there’s never a need to seek out dubious streams for BPL aficionados across the pond.

However, there’s always been a minor caveat to that convenience. Some non-televised games are only available at NBC Sports Live Extra on a web browser, or through the broadcaster’s mobile apps. This makes watching on the big TV somewhat of an inconvenience.

That all changes today with the launch of an NBC Sports Live Extra app for the Apple TV and Roku set top boxes; marking the first time the app has been available on TVs.

It’s not just the boost for football fans (soccer for our U.S. readers) either, the app arrives during the midst of the Stanley Cup Ice Hockey playoffs.

Viewers will also be able to watch the Olympics coverage, Sunday Night Football from the NFL and more PGA Tour golf than they can shake a 7-iron at.

As expected that live sporting action will require a cable subscription so while it’s not the cord-cutting live sport nirvana many are hoping for, it will liberate many users from mobile devices when tuning into big, non-televised games.
