Blackphone unveils privacy-focused app store

Blackphone has just announced the biggest update to its operating system so far, bring a dedicated privacy-focused app store.

PrivatOS 1.1 is due to land early next year and introduces a number of additions, not least ‘Spaces’.

Spaces gives users the ability to create self-contained, distinct areas or ‘spaces’ for apps, data, and accounts on a singular device.

This means that you can easily and securely split content and accounts into separate personal and work sections, or even a kid-friendly section too.

There’s also a ‘Silent Space’ included by default, which offers encrypted communication, comes crammed full of privacy apps, and provides access to the new Blackphone app store.

The app store is the world’s first to focus entirely on privacy, marking the Blackphone as one-of-a-kind when it comes to keeping your data under lock-and-key.

The store goes live in January 2015, and will showcase Blackphone-curated apps available to download on the handset.

Toby Weir-Jones, Blackphone’s CEO, said: “The addition of Spaces and the Blackphone app store is the most significant update to privatOS since its inception and is a real game changer for the brand, further highlighting our commitment to placing privacy back into the hands of the user.”

He added: “We are delighted to have developed the Silent Space, alongside Graphite Software, who share our core values or privacy and security.”

Blackphone launched back in March this year, and runs on Android OS.
