BlackBerry to lend its security expertise to Samsung’s Android phones

Samsung’s range of Android-based smartphones and tablets will soon get a security boost from the best in the business.

The Korean firm has agreed to a partnership with BlackBerry to bring the firm’s end-to-end data encryption technology to handsets like the Galaxy S5.

The Blackberry encryption tech will be folded into Samsung’s own Knox platform and could give the Galaxy Note maker the most secure Android devices on the block.

The idea is to give Samsung a greater shot at securing enterprise customers and government contracts, which have often eluded the consumer favourite on security grounds

BlackBerry will also help Samsung defend against the threat of malware to the data stored on smartphones.

“Samsung Knox is focused on delivering secure mobility solutions to enterprises,” said Samsung’s Injong Rhee. “Combined with BlackBerry’s BES12, we will offer more options for customers that need enhanced levels of security on Android devices.”

For BlackBerry the partnership represents an opportunity to continue earning a crust as it moves away from the hardware business and towards multi-platform software and security solutions.
