BlackBerry has announced a new way for people to transfer contact information and multimedia content by simply tapping their phones together.

At the GITEX conference in Dubai, one of RIM’s CEOs, Jim Balsillie, unveiled BlackBerry Tag which will be incorporated in the next update to BlackBerry 7 OS. It will allow users to share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content by simply tapping their BlackBerry smartphones together.

Of course to take advantage of this functionality you will need a BlackBerry which has an NFC chip embedded inside. This means that when the service launches, only the recently released BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 will support BlackBerry Tag.

Developers for BB OS will also be able to get in on the tapping action with RIM announcing plans to expose BlackBerry Tag through APIs on the BlackBerry platform, allowing software developers to take advantage of "tap to share" functionality from within their own applications.

"BlackBerry Tag is an exciting and innovative feature that makes sharing contact information and multimedia content effortless and seamless,” said Balsillie. “BlackBerry Tag opens a new dimension to the BlackBerry platform that is powerful, simple and intuitive and we think it will be welcomed by both users and developers.”

We still don’t know when RIM will roll out the update to BB 7 OS but once it does, all you Bold 9900 and Curve 9360 users can celebrate by clinking your phones together. Hurray!
