RIM has released an update for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Version 2.0.1.358 of the OS software is available as an OTA, or "over the air", download.

The 2.0.1 software update for BlackBerry PlayBook isn't a revolutionary update, but we imagine all you PlayBook owners are out for whatever improvements you can get. RIM hasn't released an exhaustive breakdown of the feature bonuses, but here are the main bits, in RIM's own words -

•    Browser enhancements to address performance with some websites
•    Improvements to support Android apps
•    Optimizations to Video Chat, PIM and BlackBerry Bridge applications
•    And much more!

As annoying tantalising as "much more" sounds, we expect this boils down to numerous bug fixes and tweaks. The most interesting of the lot is the Android app support improvement, being one of the main reasons to buy a tablet on a downward slope with a bespoke OS. PlayBook owners should be prompted to download the update automatically, but you can manually check for it within the tablet's settings menu.

The BlackBerry PlayBook was released in mid-2011, and saw disappointing initial sales - in part down to its high price, part its poor app roster and part the diminished cache of the BlackBerry brand. It re-gained its appeal once its price was dropped to £169 in late 2011. For the cash, it offers great build quality, a good screen and a slick - if limited - experience.
