BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 Beta Release Imminent

Andrew Williams by

The new version of the BlackBery PlayBook tablet OS, the 2.1 Beta, will be made available to developers imminently, according to PlayBook product manager Michael Clewley.

PlayBook product manager Michael Clewley tweeted that the PlayBook OS 2.1 Beta will be out at the "end of May", giving the software just a handful of hours before it turns Clewley into a fibber. He was responding to questions regarding the tablet software, rather than making a standalone announcement, but was anything but wishy-washy in his wording.

RIM has not yet announced that the PlayBook 2.1 OS will feature, but we're hoping for tighter integration of Android apps. Version 2.0 of the OS made the tablet somewhat compatible with Android software, opening-up its otherwise fairly limited functionality. Clewley also writes that the full improvements run-down of the update will be detailed in a blog post on the BlackBerry blog.

Although it was initially a rather dismal sales failure, the BlackBerry PlayBook regained its appeal once the price dropped to a bargain-tastic £170. The tablet is still available at the price, and makes a decent buy in our opinion.
