BlackBerry and Boeing join forces on self-destructing phone

BlackBerry and Boeing are going all Mission Impossible on us, creating a smartphone with the ability to self-destruct if compromised.

Dubbed the Boeing Black, the handset, which screams of spy films and science fiction, is being designed for use by U.S. defence and homeland security employees and contractors.

Sadly for those of you with thoughts of smouldering smartphones combusting in puffs of smoke, you’re going to be disappointed, this self-destructing device is far more refined.

Pieced together as a fully sealed device, the Boeing Black will automatically delete all data if its epoxy resin surround is tampered with.

According to Bruce Olcott, an outside counsel to Boeing, “Any attempt to break open the casing of the device would trigger functions that would delete the data and software contained within the device and make the device inoperable.

So, where does ailing smartphone maker BlackBerry come into the equation? Well, BB is lending its secure software services to the device.

“We’re pleased to announce that Boeing is collaborating with BlackBerry to provide a secure mobile solution for Android devices utilising out BES12 platform,” BlackBerry Chairman and CEO, John Chen, stated.

He added: “That by the way is all they allow me to say.”

Needless to say, the Boeing Black will not be available for consumer release.

This post will self-destruct in 5, 4, 3, 2,1…
