BlackBerry 64-bit octa-core smartphone tipped for 2015

BlackBerry will launch a new smartphone with a 64-bit octa-core processor in 2015, according to rumour.

The beleaguered Canadian smartphone manufacturer is yet to announce its 2014 line-up, with an announcement centred around affordable handsets in emerging markets tipped for MWC later this month.

The company is also tipped to launch a more capable quad-core smartphone called the Ontario some time this year.

However, attention is already turning to a considerably more high-end offering that could be set for release next year. According to N4BB, BlackBerry will launch a powerful new smartphone with a 64-bit octa-core processor in 2015.

Sources claim that the new handset will utilise Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8994 chip. Built on a 20nm process, this chip is one of the first next-gen offerings to utilise 64-bit architecture in the wake of Apple’s pioneering A7.

The new Snapdragon chip will also feature eight cores, each capable of hitting a clock frequency of 2.5GHz.

It’s claimed that BlackBerry plans to utilise this powerful chip in a new handset set to launch in the summer of 2015. Of course, the report also acknowledges that with BlackBerry’s recent change of CEO, such advanced plans are by no means set in stone.

John Chen took over the troubled company back in November, when the company axed former CEO Thorsten Heins and announced that it would no longer be seeking a buyer.
