20,000 new Blackberry 10 apps submitted ahead of launch

Reasearch in Motion has revealed that a near 20,000 further Blackberry 10 apps have been submitted for the upcoming platform, just days ahead of the Blackberry 10 release date.

In just 36 hours, developers have submitted almost 20,000 additional BlackBerry 10 apps as part of the latest in a series of BB10 port-a-thons, where developers are transforming existing apps for Blackberry 10 compatibility.

RIM announced the latest Blackberry 10 app pre-launch milestone on Twitter, posting “and just like that 19,071 apps have been submitted in 36 hours!” on its official account.

“Wow! Congrats to the hard working RIM developer relations team. Another 19,701 apps added to the BlackBerry 10 catalogue,” added Alec Saunders, Vice President of Developer Relations at RIM, from his personal Twitter account.

The official BlackBerry 10 release date is scheduled for January 30, with the new BB10 handsets launching along the BlackBerry 10 OS.

As of yet, BlackBerry has not revealed which applications, including those hi-profile and recognisable titles, will be appearing on BlackBerry 10, with RIM seemingly holding back any information until the BlackBerry 10 release date next week.

Much speculation surrounds the release date and the impact the new OS could have on Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS platforms who currently dominate the smartphone market.

UK retailers EE, Vodafone and O2 have confirmed their intent to stock the first BB10 smartphones, with Phones 4u’s COO Scott Hooton saying: “We believe that BlackBerry 10 is going to exceed all expectations and strengthen the brand’s position at the forefront of mobile technology.”

Are you looking forward to the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones? Will you be buying a BB10 handset over any of the Android and iOS rivals, and if so, why? Let us know via our Facebook and Twitter pages or the comments section below.
