BitTorrent goes legit with legal streaming app for iOS and Android

There’s no doubt BitTorrent made its name as a client that enabled enable piracy through P2P file-sharing, but now the firm is pressing on with recent efforts to clean up its image.

The company has launched a new legal streaming app for Android, with iOS and Apple TV versions to follow soon.

The BitTorrent Now app offers music and video from the existing BitTorrent Bundle platform, which aims to showcase the work of smaller artists.

Some content will be available freely through the ad-supported app (via Engadget), but others will be available to buy and experience without ads.

The artists themselves decide how they want to offer their content. 70 per cent of revenue goes to the artist through ads, 90 per cent of the revenue is returned to the artist for purchased content.

BitTorrent Bundle has been around on the web since 2013 and has offered content from the likes of Madonna, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and comedian David Cross.

Now the service has a fully-featured app to streamline the listening and viewing experience on smartphones, tablets and the Apple TV set-top box.
