Better battery life most wanted smartphone feature, study finds

Staying power not raw power is what consumers are after as a consumer study finds better battery life is the most coveted smartphone feature of all.

According to a new report by comparison engine Versus, “more battery power” has topped the list of most wanted smartphone features, garnering an impressive 9.04 per cent of public opinion.

The study, which has analysed data from more than 45 million product comparisons has found that improved battery life received almost twice as many consumer votes as any other smartphone feature, highlighting just how important it has become.

While recent smartphone trends have seen the industry’s biggest players repeatedly make their latest flagship offerings both bigger and faster with little improvement on staying power, a faster CPU was only the second most coveted feature (5.81 per cent) with a bigger screen size down in sixth (3.23 per cent).

Amongst the most desired smartphone features, a higher pixel density and higher resolution display were the third and fourth most popular consumer choices respectively, while more RAM rounded out the top five.

Although the iPhone’s lack of Flash support was once a major drawback for the Apple-branded smartphone, it appears the Cupertino manufacturer won the war, with just 1.05 per cent of consumers stating they now covet Flash compatibility on their smartphone.

Despite improved battery life being the most sought-after smartphone feature, consumers do not appear keen on carrying secondary power supplies with a removable battery only the tenth most popular feature with 2.42 per cent of the public vote.
