UPDATE: Bethesda has confirmed that the January 12 is yet another fan hoax, and the next-generation Skyrim is nothing more than a CMS error.

Despite our initial excitement, the Bethesda news revealed this morning has been proven to be entirely false.

"We have been working on the CMS that runs our sites. A bug caused platforms that don't exist to show up for some games. Sorry for the confused," reads a tweet from Pete Hines, Bethesda's VP of Marketing.

That puts a kibosh on the next-generation Skyrim rumours, but what about that event invite?

Well, Hines has an answer for that too, putting the e-vite down to yet another fan hoax, akin to that surrounding the (admittedly more elaborate) Fallout 4 Survivor 2299 teaser site.

"Another fan hoax", said Hines in reply to a Twitter user asking about the event invite, adding later that "we don't announce or tease our games thru email from our store."

No Fallout 4 or Xbox One/PS4 Skyrim for us then. For now.

Original Story: Bethesda has released an invite to a special event on January 12, which could be used to launch the next-generation version of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The game developer has sent out an email event invite teasing an announcement on January 12, 2014.

Unfortunately, the email gives very little away as to what the announcement will be, but some are speculating (rather wildly) that it could be Fallout 4 related.

However, it’s more likely that Bethesda will announce The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for PS4 and Xbox One to complete the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC offerings.

The official Bethesda website listed Skyrim for both next-generation consoles. On the Skyrim product page, a modified caption for the game mentions the Xbox One and PS4. The PC and current gen console links redirect to an online storefront, but the Xbox One and PS4 ones don’t at present.

At the time of writing, the reference to Skyrim for Xbox One and PS4 on the official website is still there and hasn’t been removed, so this may well be the subject for the January 12 announcement.

Of course, we might be entirely wrong and the announcement is Elder Scrolls Online related, but whatever it is, we’re certainly intrigued.

TrustedReviews has contacted Bethesda for some information.
