Belkin’s new Charge + Sync dock for Apple Lightning devices

Accessories maker Belkin has announced a range of products compatible with Apple’s new Lightning dock connector, becoming the first third-party company to do so.

The Lightning dock features on the Apple iPhone 5, iPad mini, iPod nano seventh generation, fifth-gen iPod touch and the fourth-gen iPad.

Although it takes up less space on the devices themselves, pre-existing peripherals need an adapter to convert from the old dock style to a Lightning connector. Apple’s official version comes with a high £25 price tag and also contains proprietary technology that makes it harder to create unofficial knock-offs.

Now, Apple-endorsed third-party accessories are starting to appear, supporting the Lightning dock and potentially reducing the need for an adapter. This week Belkin announced two new products, with more to follow later this year.

The first is a hard-wired Car Charger for Lightning, which updates its existing accessory in this category. It has a 1.2m (4-foot) cable and produces 10 watts/2.1amps (with over-voltage protection) and is compatible with all of the current Apple Lightning-enabled devices. Its price is £24.99 (€29.99 or $29.99).

The second item is a ‘Charge Sync’ dock, which has a foldaway aux jack, a channel to hold your existing Lightning cable, a removable magnetic base and an audio-out port for headphones or speakers. It also costs £24.99 but, according to Belkin, it is only compatible with the iPhone 5 or fifth-gen iPod touch.

Was Apple’s change to the smaller docking port worth it to get slimmer gadgets or do you resent having to buy new accessories all over again? Discuss it on the Trusted Reviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or via the comments boxes below.
