The BBM Windows Phone app is now just weeks away

A BBM Windows Phone app is finally on its way, with BlackBerry CEO John Chen confirming the mobile messaging service will hit Microsoft’s smartphone OS in July.

Leaving just weeks until the BBM Windows Phone app finally lands, Chen made the announcement during BlackBerry’s quarterly earnings call last night.

Although former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop confirmed back in February that a BBM Windows Phone app was already in the works, Chen’s confirmation is the first time BlackBerry has put a planned arrival time on the app.

Despite BBM having moved from its BlackBerry roots to iOS and Android last year, BlackBerry repeatedly stated that Windows Phone was not a priority.

“It [the continuing lack of a BBM Windows Phone app] is entirely market driven,” David Proulx, BlackBerry’s Senior Director of BBM Business Development told TrustedReviews back in January. “Our initial launch on iOS and Android was a function of the prevalence of those platforms.”

He added: “It is not a statement of intent, and it’s not a strategic or religious thing, it’s just a function of when does it make sense and when is it something that consumers demand in sufficient numbers to make it worth our while and worth their while.”

Despite early hesitations, the BBM Windows Phone app seems to have been something of an inevitability.

As well as confirming the BBM Windows Phone app is on the horizon, BlackBerry yesterday announced a new upcoming handset – the 4.5-inch square display hosting BlackBerry Passport.
