Batman: Arkham Origins screenshots and plot details revealed

Batman: Arkham Origins was announced last night with today bringing screenshots and more details about the upcoming prequel.

Taking place two years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the story of Batman: Arkham Origins is set on Christmas Eve during Batman’s second year of existence.

Supervillain Black Mask places a target on Batman, calling to all assassins and villains to kill him and win a huge fortune. Batman must outsmart all those who come up against him, understand why BlackMask wants him dead and convince the Gotham City Police Department that he is one of the good guys.

Opting for a prequel game rather than the follow up to the two existing Batman: Arkham titles, Warner Bros. Montreal has said it allows it to “refresh characters, refresh ideas, refresh the dynamic between Batman and other characters, and refresh the world.”

The game will feature the same free-flow combat system featured in Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, with the game’s senior production quoting the age old phrase “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” However, the combat will be infused with “new layers, new opportunities, and new tactics.”

Detective mode will also be improved, as Warner Bros. Montreal has said it wants to tell a story from “within the detective environment”, quoting the BBC TV series Sherlock as one if the game’s inspirations.

The Batman: Arkham Origins Gotham City should be around double the size of the game world of Batman: Arkham City, but to access all areas players must dismantle a hacked tower network, in a system akin to the Far Cry 3 towers or Assassin’s Creed series’ vantage points.

Batman will also gain access to missions and crimes to solve outside of the main campaign, including a new “Most Wanted System” or “Crime in Progress” markers used in Batman: Arkham City, but will increase Batman’s notoriety in the new game.

Due to be released on October 25, Batman: Arkham Origins will launch on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and the Nintendo Wii U. For now, fans of the series will have to content themselves with the screenshots of Batman: Arkham Origins that have appeared courtesy of Game Informer.
