Batman: Arkham Knight wouldn’t be possible on current gen consoles, due to the massive world and brand new drivable Batmobile.
Speaking to GameInformer in an interview, the drivable Batmobile alone takes up around 160MB of memory, which would be just too huge for the PS3 or Xbox 360 to handle.
“It will fit just about in an Xbox 360 if [that was the whole] game. It’s very next-gen”, explained art director David Hego.
In Arkham Knight, the Batmobile will be able to perform burnouts, jumps, boosts and circle rotations and will be protected by its bulletproof armour.
“Basically… nothing stops the Batmobile. It’s pretty much an unstoppable force,” said Sefton Hill, game director. “When you think Batman, you do think Batmobile. It’s the one key thing that we’ve really felt that we always wanted to do.”
You’ll be able to summon the Batmobile with a button press and Batman can eject himself at high-speed.
The Rocksteady developers also revealed that Arkham Knight will be single-player only, similar to the upcoming The Order: 1886 for PS4.
“This is a single-player game. There is no multiplayer. We don’t have the time to do multiplayer,” explained Hill. “We want to focus on making the best single-player experience we can. We don’t feel that it needs a multiplayer element. Warner Bros backed that up right at the start.”
Along with old favourites, Arkham Knight’s Gotham will also be home to a brand new arch-nemesis, who is currently unnamed, but looks very similar to Batman himself in silhouette.
“We wanted to introduce someone who could really challenge Batman, to go head-to-head with him in lots of different ways. This guy is definitely a formidable foe for Batman.”
The Arkham Knight Gotham City will also be around five times the size of Arkham City’s world and will be split into three islands.
“We’re not trying to create the biggest open-world game ever,” said Hill. “We are trying to create a really rich, vibrant, dense open world.”
