Batman: Arkham 3 confirmed 2013 release date

Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed that the next Batman: Arkham title, currently named Batman: Arkham 3, will be released sometime this year.

During the company’s Q4 2012 earnings call, Time Warner CFO John Martin revealed that 2013 will be the year for Batman: Arkham 3.

“And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise,” said Martin. “So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012.”

Following on from the 2009 Batman: Arkham Asylum and the 2011 Batman: Arkham City releases, the third Batman: Arkham game has yet to be named or assigned a developer.

Warner Bros. Interactive has not given any details about what platforms Batman: Arkham 3 will launch on, but critics are nonetheless suggesting the understated Batman: Arkham 3 release date revelation could mean it is a next-gen title, launching on the Microsoft Xbox 720 and Sony Playstation 4.

Even if this is true, very little else is known about the game, especially the setting. Rumours suggest Batman: Arkham 3 could be a prequel to the first two games, set in the 1950s’ Silver Age of Comics. Depicting Batman’s first encounter with the Joker, the Silver Age game was reportedly in production last summer by Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City developer Rocksteady, but never came to fruition.

The last Batman: Arkham game, Batman: Arkham City, sold 4.6 million units worldwide in its opening week, soaring to game chart top spots across all platforms and earning itself a place as one of 2011’s best selling titles. Both games in the series have achieved great success, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and a Video Game BAFTA each. Batman: Arkham City won in the 2012 Action category and Batman: Arkham Asylum took the Best Game gong in 2010.

If Batman: Arkham 3 builds on the successes of its predecessors, it seems it could be a potential best seller for 2013 despite strong competition from titles already tipped to top this year’s charts.
