Barclays customers experiencing trouble accessing their accounts over the weekend have been assured that the bank is simply experiencing “technical issues.”
Reports emerged over the weekend that Barclays customers were unable to use their debit cards or access their accounts online. However, the company has moved to assure people that there’s nothing to worry about.
On Saturday the bank tweeted that it was “experiencing technical issues,” and apologised for the inconvenience. It also confirmed that this was an internal system problem rather than the result of a hack.
Tensions have been heightened in recent days after UK broadband provider TalkTalk experienced a high profile cyberattack, compromising its customers’ personal details.
It’s possible that this latest Barclays glitch is related to the bank’s “essential pre-planned maintenance” work, which was undertaken over the weekend due to the clocks changing.
As The Guardian reports, this isn’t the first such glitch to have affected Barclays. Apparently, the bank’s antiquated computer systems have been struggling as more and more customers shift to online and mobile banking.

Barclays has assured customers that these latest issues have been fixed. On Sunday, it emailed the following statement:
“We can confirm that customer services are now recovering from the outage we experienced yesterday. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”
The bank has encouraged customers to use its online services and banking apps to check their accounts, owing to the high volume of helpline enquiries on the matter.
