Jams a boatload of features into a reasonably compact body.
With the HD DVD/Blu-ray battle still very much in the air Asus has shown its (considerably classy) colours with the W2P.
The latest edition to the company’s multimedia orientated W2 range has been outted by Reg Hardware and packs an HD DVD drive with an all important HDCP compliant HDMI output as well as an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and ATI Mobility Radeon X1700 graphics with 256MB VRAM.
To take full advantage of its high definition capabilities the W2P sports a native WUXGA (1.920 x 1,200) display and yet the whole machine weighs only 3.3Kg and measures 39.5 x 29 x 3.5cm. Both 2MB and 4MB flavours of Merom chips will be available and, as you would expect, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 come as standard.
At this stage we have no details on availability or pricing, but Asus isn’t usually one to let details slip on its products a long time before launch so expected it to drop this side of Santa Season.
In related news DigiTimes has posted a shot (above) of a prototype laptop with small external display. Clamshell mobile phones have long been in on this act and it could prove a real boon being able to check for wireless hotspots, new email and monitor downloads without opening your machine.
On the downside, it is an exposed display with the potential to get scratched. Still it seems like a logical development if tackled in the right way. Asus, we like you!
