The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 has become the first non-Nexus device to get Android 4.2 courtesy of an over the air update.
Asus announced the update via a press release, claiming that “enhanced performance, stability and multiple user account logins” would be added to US versions of the Asus Transformer Pad TF300. Other regions will apparently get the update throughout March.
The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 is the first non-Google device to receive the upgrade from Android 4.1. As Asus itself points out, it is “the first manufacturer to receive Android 4.2 for partnered tablets.”
Up to now, the only devices running Android 4.2 (or 4.2.2, as it currently stands) have belonged to the Google Nexus range. The Google Nexus 4 and the Google Nexus 10 shipped with Android 4.2, whilst the Google Nexus 7 has subsequently been updated to the latest Google OS version.
Entry-level Asus Transformer Pad
It’s interesting to note that the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 isn’t the top of the range of the company’s hybrid devices. In fact, it’s the company’s entry-level Transformer tablet. The reason for its preferential treatment could be explained by the fact that Asus calls the TF300 “one of the most successful ASUS tablets to date.”
Asus says that the high-end Asus Transformer Pad Infinity and other Asus tablets will get the Android 4.2 update in the second quarter of the year.
Arguably the biggest addition to Android 4.2 lies in something Google calls ‘Project Butter’ – a behind the scenes overhaul that makes everything smoother and more responsive. Here’s hoping other devices start getting the update soon so we can all benefit from this buttery goodness.
