Only five ASUS ROG GX700s will be available in the UK

ROG GX700

The water-cooled, overclockable Asus ROG GX700 gaming laptop is finally available for the select few who can afford it.

First the bad news, for those who don't have the cash to pay for it right now: Asus has revealed the first run of the GX700, which is hand-built, will only include five devices. These five units will be distributed across Overclockers (which has a pre-order page already), John Lewis, PC World and Scan. Overclockers will stock two GX700s initially, while the rest will get one each.

Based on demand, more will be produced for subsequent runs if enthusiasts are smitten by its specifications and ludicrous design. If things go really well, Asus would consider ramping up production to a proper line, but that's a long way off. For me, the hand-built element actually adds to its desirability, although the efficiency gains of a proper production line would probably do the price a few favours.

Those who pluck up the courage to pre-order a GX700 can expect their machine to arrive in the next couple of weeks, although Asus hasn't nailed down an exact shipping date.

The price? A very, very cool £3,500. But it's all about what you get for your money.

In terms of processing power, you're supplied with an Intel Core i7-6820HK with a maximum non-overclocked frequency of 3.6GHz. With the water-cooling dock connected, you can expect to overclock the processor up to around 4.2GHz. The graphics card is a desktop-class Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. This can also be overclocked with the dock connected, although we'll have to wait for our own in-depth testing to see how big the numbers will go. The RAM, of which 32GB is supplied, can be boosted from 2133MHz to 2800MHz.

The insanity doesn't end there: your primary storage drives are two 256GB SSDs in RAID 0 backed up by a 1TB hard disk for bulk storage. The screen is a Full HD model with Nvidia G-Sync, which is good news for players who value frame rate beyond all else.

It'll weigh either 3.6kg or 3.8kg depending on the battery. With the dock it'll weigh a massive 4.8kg. Not that you'll be carrying it around like that.
