Asus Padfone 2 specs leak (again) ahead of October 16 launch

Specs purporting to be for the forthcoming Asus Padfone 2 have once again leaked onto the internet. The modular Android device will be significantly more powerful than its predecessor when it finally appears on October 16.

Remember the original Asus Padfone? It was an interesting attempt to mix elements of a tablet with elements of a smartphone, but it was just a little too clumsy and utilitarian in design to appeal in the same way as other hybrid solutions.

Well, okay, like the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Still, it was a bold idea. The Padfone (pictured) was literally that - a modular smartphone that could slot into a larger tablet shell when needed, negating the need for two separate devices.

News of a follow-up has been circulating for a while, and was confirmed recently by an invite from Asus to a Padfone 2 launch event on October 16. Ahead of that, though, some specs alleged to be for the device have emerged.

According to Italian website eeepc, the new hybrid device will come with a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor backed by 2GB of RAM - a sizeable step up from the dual-core first device on the power front.

Another big improvement is the hybrid’s screen, which is receiving a bump up to a 4.7-inch number with a 1280 x 720 resolution, competitive with the top-end Android smartphone contenders like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X.

One spec that really jumps out is the Padfone 2’s 13-megapixel rear camera. So far, it's all gelling nicely with the original leak, which makes it one heck of a contender at the premium smartphone end.

One new titbit is that the PadFone 2 will come with a 2,140mAh battery, which should keep it ticking along nicely - though it's not a patch on the 3,100mAh unit in the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
